Antiques dealer Thomasina Bateman is writing a book on the barrows of England and is documenting the treasures that she discovers inside. An intriguing letter prompts her to visit the tiny village of Bewlay located in rural England. She sets out by train along with her assistant that same day.
When she arrives, however she discovers that the mysterious person who called her has not yet be found. Her assistant never arrives. The landowner is obstinate in refusing access to the barrow and locals are suspicious of this woman who is going on her own, also (gasp!) wears trousers.
The digging of Hob’s Barrow is off to a rocky start. But then Thomasina experiences strange visions…
